ARCHI-FLIPPING

I have put off writing this post about the iPad app, Flipboard, for several reasons.  First, there is the vague sensation that I am in some way being a techno-snob.  Starting off with, “Last night while I was on my ipad…”, seemed well, a little pretentious.  Second, I didn’t want to give away my “secret” for finding so many cool architectural tidbits before others had discovered them.  Third, my cousin (in law) had a hand in creating the app, so mentioning it felt kind of…braggy.  No matter, the time has come to let you in on my serious nighttime obsession.

Basically, the Flipboard application is a free iPad app (also available, but nowhere near as good, on the iPhone) that culls a huge selection of magazines from the web and organizes then into groups which you can set up on your main page.  For example, my main page has the following groups: Architecture, Lifestyle, Food and Dining, Longreads, Humor, Women’s Health, Style, etc.  I just touch one of my groups and the page is loaded with a small picture and blurb of an interesting article from that particular topic.  So, when I touch the architecture icon a page opens up with three blurbs and accompanying photos from magazines and sites like, Architizer, ArchDaily, Archidose, Dezeen, Dwell, Freshome, Architecturelab, and Architects Newspaper. Then I just run my finger across like I am flipping the page and voila, the page flips. It is AWESOME.  So, if you have an iPad, check this app out…and if you don’t, at least check out some of these cool sites I’ve linked.  I am sure at least one of them will be new to you.

  1. I can indeed vouch for the awesomeness of Flipboard. But, it must be used with caution, as it has a tendency to become way more interesting than anything (or anyone) else!

  2. Love Flipboard! I try to tell people all the time how great it is, but they don’t get it until they install it and become obsessed with it themselves!

  3. Aside from the fact that it is the coolest app ever and easiest to use even for someone not so techy, I love it because my son wrote the app for the Iphone which makes it accessible to a larger population. I read the world news on it every day!

  4. Just downloaded the Flipboard app on my iPhone and am amazed at how quickly it maneuvers! I really like the flipping of the pages and the variety of topic possibilities! How convenient!

  5. Love flipboard! I probably check it a couple of times a day. And the stuff i want to see again, i just email to myself. Thanks for sharing!!

  6. Last night I was on my I-pad too! And the night before! And this morning! And I can’t wait to download Flipboard, cause it sounds very cool. Thanks for the heads up.
